Understand performance scores
Because job requirements vary by job, it can be challenging to understand and compare ratings. For example, imagine an employee received a level 2 rating in a review, how would you determine whether that constituted a ‘good’ rating or not? The answer would depend on the requirements of the job in question. If it was a senior job that required level 4 of the competency, the level 2 rating would be viewed as below target. On the other hand, if this were an entry-level job requiring level 1 of the competency, then the rating would be viewed as above target.
Performance scores provide the above analysis for you so that you can easily see how each employee is rated relative to the requirements of the job they’re being evaluated against. In addition, performance scores are standardized (from 1 to 10) so that you can easily compare all the individuals in a review and easily see how everyone is performing relative to their job requirements.
Performance scores are only available for snapshot reviews, not for in-depth.
How points are awarded
To calculate the score, we first assign points based on the subject’s assessment ratings. We then repeat the same process for the manager’s ratings. The target is always the level specified on the job description.
Each question rated above target is awarded 2 points.
Each question rated at target is awarded 1 point.
Each question rated below target is awarded 0 points.
Steps used to calculate the performance score
1. Add each participant’s scores together
Sum the points assigned by each participant for all questions.
2. Determine the maximum possible score
Multiply the number of questions by 2 (the highest possible score per question), then multiply by the number of participants.
3. Calculate the final performance score
Divide the total score by the maximum possible score, then multiply by 10 to get the final performance score.
Example calculation
If there are 8 questions, and the ratings are as follows:
Subject's Ratings | Manager's Ratings |
---|---|
|
|
1. Add all scores together
Total score = 12 + 13 = 25
2. Calculate the maximum possible score
Maximum possible score = 8 questions × 2 points × 2 participants = 32
3. Calculate the final performance score
Performance score = (25 ÷ 32) × 10 = 7.8
The final performance score is 7.8.
Notes
If the subject scores below target for all questions, their score is 0.
If the subject scores at target for every question Or has a balanced average of scores below and above target, their score is 5.
If the subject scores above target for every question, their score is 10.
